3 WELLNESS SECRETS TO BEAT THE HEAT

In Ayurveda, the ancient healing art of India upon which Aveda is based, our bodies are governed by doshas—kapha, vata, or pitta—that determine our fundamental constitutions. These doshas correspond with the earth’s elements, which explains why we are so influenced by changes in the weather.

In the summer, says Helga Hefner, Aveda Manager of Professional Skin and Spa Education, no matter your dosha, you’re apt to be a little fierier, and therefore, it’s a good idea to focus on activities and foods that cool the body. Here’s how:

1. Eat Seasonally

If you consume more of what nature gives us in summer—think melons and peaches—you’ll be taking in more high-water-content foods, which will keep you well-hydrated. Green salads are also considered high-water-content foods. Helga also loves fruit-infused water.

2. Don’t Slurp Your Smoothies

Eat them with a spoon out of a cup or bowl, says Helga. “They’re highly concentrated meals nutritionally, and your body has to assimilate them just like solid food. More to the point, according to Ayurveda, the shock of cold to your belly caused by gulping is believed to force your body to heat up in order to warm and digest the smoothie’s nutrients. That’s no way to keep your cool!

3. Get Outside

Your body thrives when it is in contact with fresh air and sunlight. Having a good variety of options for the outdoor portion of your day will help motivate you to get moving, says Helga. Consider activities like biking, playing Frisbee or volleyball, or walking with a friend to beat exercise boredom. Just make sure you’re allowing your body enough time for rest and recovery—and aim to exercise in the morning—so that you don’t overheat. Also, be sure to slather on your Daily Light Guard™ SPF 30 to protect your skin from the rays.
